This session focuses on two works of St. Methodius, a relatively unknown (in our time) father: Discourse on the Resurrection; and Concerning Free Will.
In his defense of a bodily resurrection, Methodius focuses on what Pope Benedict has termed a theology of creation: that God has created all things good. He argues against the separation of the physical and the spiritual, but rather sees in them a unity. Methodius also debunks the notion that, after death, we become angels, pointing out that Jesus was using simile, not literalism. We also note the contradiction and inconsistencies of his argument, many of which are probably due to the fact that the last two sections of his work are excerpted from another work by Photius, making it difficult to tell material authored by Photius from that authored by Methodius.
His defense of free will is primarily directed against the Valentinian notion that evil is uncreated, an autonomous force that is coexistent with God. Instead, Methodius argues that this is a logical absurdity, and that instead that human action is responsible for the origin and persistence of evil. Given his sharp disagreement with the Valentinian position, his respectful tone throughout the work is also notable.
