The class focuses on two of St. Cyprian's works, The Lapsed and On Mortality (or On the Plague). We focus on the two major problems that Cyprian identifies in his two works, both of which represent structural sin: a sense of complacency that allows the call of discipleship to be replaced with pursuit of worldly concerns; self-deception -- the belief that this displacement is acceptable; and a sense of entitlement -- that Christians, by virtue of being Christians, deserve special graces from God and should be exempt from suffering. Because of his incisive analysis, Cyprian, as his deacon Pontius writes in his biography of Cyprian, speaks to us across the ages.
We also examine several additional topics, including the evidence for infant baptism in The Lapsed, and his insistence that ultimately only God can forgive sin.
We also mention an additional video, St. Cyprian on Epidemics and Pandemics, which discusses St. Cyprian's guidance for the way in which Christians should respond to epidemics and pandemics.
