Making an air layer

Air layering is a means of minimising harm to your bonsai and possibly creating another at the same time. It is a form of propagating. Unlike other methods this is far more conservative likely to succeed even with difficult species.

The process is simple in theory and only slightly more difficult in practice.  This means an air layer can be very beginner friendly.

On the other hand air layers do require more work and equipment of a  kind. This means you might not want to jump straight into an airlyaer.

Where a cutting propagating technique involves cutting off all attachment to the parent plant and hoping it grows roots this is rather more reliable. That is because it remains attached to the parent plant.

More than just being a way to create more possible bonsai this method is also, arguably, softer on your existing bonsai. That is because you are not strictly removing a branch by pruning and definitely not in one go. It is  a more gradual process.

As you not just remove larger branches branches but do so more gently your bonsai do not get shocked and horrified in the same way.

You also get much larger trunks. Imagine cutting off years if not decades of to get the same thickness of trunk and you will understand why it is so very helpful.

One thing of importance is that this method effectively produces clones. That means any issues you have with the original plant such a pests, diseases and so on will also exist with the propagated specimens.
