In this Bonsai video I show you how to EASILY Double Air Layer for Bonsai. This is also known as Double Layering or the 'double hanging' Method.

Part One of This Air Layer: How to Air Layer an Old Apple Tree fo...

Hi everyone! Today, I show you how to easily do a double air layering. This technique may seem a bit "advanced" at first, requiring a tad more patience than regular air layering. But don't worry, I've got you covered! In this step-by-step tutorial, I'll break down each stage to make it super easy to understand, even for Bonsai beginners! 🌿

We'll go over all the tools you'll need to master double layering, and I'll share some special tips to boost your success. One valuable trick is adding root booster to the spaghnum moss, promoting robust root growth. Additionally, we'll cover the importance of keeping the moss ball in the dark, as roots thrive better in such conditions. 🌱

What is Double Layering?
Compared to a standard air layering method, where the tree is separated from the parent tree after the roots fill the moss bag, the double air layering technique involves a unique process. After the roots have developed, they are pruned, and the layering is then re-wrapped in moss or substrate to encourage further growth before eventual separation. The significant advantage of double layering lies in achieving 2x faster Nebari development. When the roots are pruned and regrow, they undergo subdivision, resulting in a more compact and robust growth pattern, rather than growing long and spindly.

How does Double Layering Work?
Pruning the roots involves removing the root tip meristematic tissue. Because plant growth is regulated by hormones, the absence of meristematic tissue, while there are still abundant carbohydrates and hormones present, triggers the production of new meristematic sites. In the case of a vigorous and healthy tree, this can lead to an overproduction of new sites, resulting in the formation of more root tips than there were initially. Depending on the tree's vigor, this increase in root tips can range from 1.1 times to up to 3 times or even more. This concept is also applicable in root pruning during repotting.
