Why is Texas American? The Texas Revolution saw Texans fight for their freedom from the regime of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in Mexico. Led by the likes of Sam Houston, Stephen Austin, and Davy Crockett, the Texans eventually prevailed, however after their hard-fought victory the newly independent Republic of Texas was mostly inhabited by settlers from the United States. So, the republic sought accession into the Union.
