Why are there two Koreas?

For centuries Joseon ruled over all of Korea as one country, but then everything changed when Japan colonized Korea in 1910. The Japanese fought against and lost to the allies during WW2 and after the war, the original plan was for Korea to be set free from the Japanese as a single country. Unfortunately for them, the Cold War got in the way and North and South Korea, each with their respective international patron, each sought to unite the Korean Peninsula by force.
