Why Does the Pope Have a Country? | Vatican City Explained

Why does Vatican City exist? It doesn't make sense, right? A tiny state of less than a thousand people—none of whom were born there—sitting right in the middle of Rome, and ruled by the Pope of all people! Well, the Vatican has been owned by the Popes for over a thousand years, they've been in Rome since the time of the Caesars, but they used to control a whole lot more land around it. The Papal States, as it was known, made the Pope a powerful player on the Italian peninsula, but what it brought down, and why did their control of Vatican City persist?
