After the success of our video AT THE RESTAURANT, we decided to make a video on “business Italian”, with the expressions and the words to know in order to work in Italy!

WORKING in Italy: words and expressions
ANNUNCIO (ad) → If a firm needs staff, new workers, it makes an ad on a newspaper or on the Internet.

CANDIDATI (candidates) → They are all the people who are interested in the job proposed by the ad.

STAGISTA (intern) →  If the application is accepted by the company, you might become – in most cases – intern, that is an employee who takes part in an internship, a period of training during which the interns learn how to carry out the tasks required by that specific job.

CURRICULUM → The curriculum, also known as curriculum vitae or CV, is a document indicating the education and job career of someone.

REQUISITI (requirements) → The requirements are the qualities and the skills that are necessary and required for a specific goal, in this case a determined job.

S.p.A. / S.r.l. → As for S.p.A., this is a typical Italian business abbreviation standing for Società per Azioni. An other similar abbreviation is S.r.l., that stands for Società a responsabilità limitata. In both cases, there are people putting money in order to start the firm, but the S.p.A. can be listed on the stock exchange, while the S.r.l. can’t.

REFERENZE (reference) → If you’re looking for a job, a reference is very important. A reference includes information that other employers wrote about you, your moral and professional qualities.

LAVORARE IN PROPRIO (working on your own) → We have already seen this expression in the video about all the meanings of the word PROPRIO, that is working independently, without a boss. The opposite of a worker on his or her own is the LAVORATORE DIPENDENTE (employee).

FARE LA GAVETTA (to work your way up the ladder) → Obviously, since it is very difficult to find a highly qualified job very soon, you should start by working your way up the ladder, that is starting with humble and badly payed jobs, in order to gradually obtain higher-level jobs.

AVVIARE UN’ATTIVITÀ (start a business) → If you don’t want to work your way up the ladder, it is better for you to start your own business! However, in order to do it, you should get through all those boring administrative steps, made by papers and queues… We don’t know whether it is the best choice or not, especially here in Italy, where the bureaucracy is one of the longest and most articulated.

PARTITA IVA (VAT registration number) → In order to start your own business in Italy, you need the “partita IVA”, that is a 11-digit number characterizing a specific company!

PRESTITO / FINANZIAMENTO (loan / financing) → In order to start your own business, you need money. That’s why you have to get a loan from a bank, that is a sum of money that you get as long as you return it in installments.

STIPENDIO (salary) → The salary is the best part of the job! It is the money you gain, you receive and you can spend as you want!

INVESTIRE DENARO (invest money) → The best thing is not to waste your money, but to invest it, that is using it for some transactions that – we hope – will give you a revenue, a profit. For example: to open a store, to buy shares in the stock market, to open a bed and breakfast and so on.

FILIALE (branch) → If your own business gives you a lot of revenues, you might want to expand it in other cities or countries through the branches. A branch is a sub-office of a company that works employed by the headquarters.

SOCIO (partner) → If the company grows, you might not be able anymore to face all those tasks that arise, so you might need the presence of one or more partners. A partner is a person who owns part of the company and therefore who cooperates to its growth.

CONSIGLIO DI AMMINISTRAZIONE (Management Board) → It’s a group of people that work for the management of the company, but they don’t necessarily own it.
