Everybody knows that without vocabulary, without words, it is really difficult to communicate in a foreign language, isn’t it? For this reason we decided to offer you a test with some Italian words that can be tricky and that you must absolutely know! (do the test before reading definitions and examples on the website!)
20 MUST-KNOW Italian WORDS!
MOZZAFIATO → breathtaking.
For example:
Quando sono salita sulla Cupola del Brunelleschi, ho potuto godere di una vista mozzafiato! (When I went on the Brunelleschi’s Dome, I enjoyed a very breathtaking view)
REPELLENTE → disgusting and nauseating, revolting.
For example:
Non capisco perché lo trovi così tanto repellente: a me sembra un bel ragazzo… (I don’t understand why you find him so revolting: I think he’s handsome…)
PANTOFOLAIO → couch potato.
For example:
Che pantofolaio che sei! Non esci di casa da un mese o più! (What a couch potato you are! You haven’t gone out for a month or more!)
PIGIAMONE → one of those entire pajamas, often funny, with unicorns, dinosaurs, cartoons’ characters and so on.
For example:
Con quel pigiamone sembri un cartone animato! Quanto sei buffa! (You look like a cartoon with that entire pajama! How funny you are!)
ESPELLERE → to expel someone – usually after a disciplinary action – because of an incorrect behavior (past participle: espulso).
For example:
Dopo aver picchiato un suo compagno di classe, Paolo è stato espulso da scuola. (After beating one of his classmates, Paolo was expelled from school)
DIMETTERE → to dismiss, discharge a patient from the hospital or a prisoner who spent some time in prison (past participle: dimesso).
For example:
Lorenza è stata dimessa dopo un ricovero di 15 giorni. (Lorenza was dismissed after a 15-day-hospitalization)
NUOCERE → to harm, damage.
For example:
Fumare nuoce gravemente alla salute. (Smoking seriously ruins our health)
PRUDERE → to itch.
For example:
Mi prude la schiena ma non riesco a grattarmi! (My back itches but I can’t scratch)
BARZELLETTA → a funny short story that is told to make someone laugh, joke.
{barzelletta of the day: Un francese, un tedesco e un italiano fanno una gara a chi resiste di più in una stanza piena di mosche. Parte il francese, che dopo un quarto d’ora viene fuori. Poi va il tedesco, che esce dopo un’ora. Infine entra l’italiano che viene fuori dopo cinque ore.
Il francese: “Ma come hai fatto?”
L’italiano “Ne ho uccisa una”
Il tedesco “E allora?”
L’italiano “E allora erano tutte impegnate per il funerale!”}

Se non sai cosa dire per impressionarla, usa una citazione famosa! (If you don’t know what to tell her to impress her, use a famous quote!)
LOGORROICO → long-winded, verbose.
For example:
Sono logorroica: quando comincio a parlare non la smetto più! (I’m a long-winded person: when I start talking, I never stop!)
COLLERICO → choleric, irritable, irascible.
For example:
Se sei così collerico, non avrai più amici! (If you’re so irritable, you won’t have friends anymore!)
AVERE QUALCOSA IN SERBO → to save, to put aside something, in order to take it out at the right time.
For your information, SERBO also indicates the inhabitant of Serbia, while CROATO indicates the inhabitant of Croatia.
For example:
Nessuno sa cosa abbia in serbo il destino! (Nobody knows what the destiny has in reserve)
Il nuovo fidanzato di Ilaria è croato. (Ilaria’s new boyfriend is from Croatia)
POZZANGHERA → puddle.
For example:
Ha piovuto così tanto che ci sono pozzanghere dappertutto! (It rained so much that there are puddles everywhere!)
PATTUMIERA → garbage can.
For example:
Se quello yogurt è scaduto, gettalo nella pattumiera! (If the yogurt has expired, throw it away in the garbage can!)
SPARPAGLIARE → to spread, scatter.
For example:
Quanto disordine in questa stanza! Ci sono oggetti sparpagliati dappertutto! (How messy this room is! There are objects scattered everywhere!)
STRAPAZZARE → mistreat someone or to take no care of something.
For example:
Lo hai strapazzato tanto, povero ragazzo! In fondo, ha solo fatto male una fotocopia! (You mistreated him a lot! After all, he only made a copy badly!)
SBOLOGNARE → to get rid of someone or to palm something off to somebody.
For example:
Al capo non piaceva il nuovo stagista, così lo ha sbolognato! (The boss didn’t like the new intern, so he got rid of him!)
RIFILARE → to saddle with, to dump something on somebody.
