TL;DR: Index of refraction can be described by the formula n = c/v, where n = index of refraction, c = speed of light in a vacuum, and v = speed of light in the medium of interest. Fermat’s Principle of Least Time shows us that light will take the “intuitive” path that allows it to get from “Point A” to “Point B” the quickest.

*NOTE: Fermat’s Principle of Least Time, strictly speaking, is not within the scope of the MCAT. It is, however, a good way to remember how light travels when it is refracted through different mediums—it is a particularly good way of thinking about Snell’s Law in a more qualitative and less quantitative way.

Today’s MedCat video covers the unitless index of refraction (plural: indices of refraction). Index of refraction is, in a way, a way we can slow down light! Light normally travels at a speed of 3 x 10^8 m/s in a vacuum, but rarely actually travels that fast due to being slowed down by matter in its way. Index of refraction is a way to quantify how much light is slowed down. We can see this more clearly
