Cardiac muscles are myogenic, meaning that their rate of contraction (ie. heart rate) is controlled by the sino-atrial node itself. However, the medulla oblongata of the brain can affect the frequency of its impulses to affect the heart rate under different scenarios. The adrenal medulla can also release adrenaline and noradrenaline that can affect the heart rate. In this video, we will focus on the nervous pathway of how changes in the blood can be detected and to signal a change in heart rate.
