Patriarch Bartholomew I meets Istanbul mayor

(4 Jul 2019) Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, visited Istanbul's recently-elected mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu on Thursday.
The meeting took place at the main municipality building in Istanbul.
Following a closed-door meeting, the two men made a brief statement where Patriarch Bartholomew offered his blessings to Imamoglu and to the people of Istanbul.
The centre-left Imamoglu is a member of the secular opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
He won the mayoral election in June after a re-run, and is seen as one of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political challengers.
