Ellora Caves
Ajanta and Ellora caves, are one of the finest examples of ancient rock-cut caves, and is located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India. Ajanta and Ellora caves complex is adorned with beautiful sculptures, paintings, and frescoes and include Buddhist monasteries, Hindu and Jain temples.
Ellora Caves also known as "Ellora Leni" in Marathi are cluster of around 100 caves and only 34 of these caves are open to public. Ellora is a UNESCO world heritage site built around 5th century to 12th century.
Ellora caves mainly is divided into three religious systems Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism.
Each system had its individual style of architecture and presents a varied styles side by side.
The Buddhism caves(1-12) are built the earliest in 5th and 8th century, Hinduism Caves (13-29) in 7th and 10th century and Jainism caves (30-34) in 9th and 12th century.
The most notable caves of Ellora as per Sculptures and Architecture:
Cave16 - Kailasha Temple (Hinduism)
Cave10 - Visvakarma or Sutar ki Jhopdi (Bhuddism)
Cave 11&12 - Teen Tal (Buddhism)
Cave 15 - Dasavatara  (Hinduism)
Cave 21 - Ramesvara  (Hinduism)
Cave 29 - Dumar Lena  (Hinduism)
Cave 32 - Indra Sabha (Jainism)
Amongst these, Kailasha Temple Cave 16 is an excellent structural innovation, and marks the culmination of rock-cut architecture in India featuring elaborate workmanship and striking proportions. The temple is carved from One rock carved from top to bottom, which makes it unique cave temple as all other caves are from front to back. The temple is supported by its geometry and not pillars and have no joints or pasting. The sculpture depicting stories of Shiva & Parvati, entire narration of Ramayana and Mahabharata carved in stone, huge and beautiful two Dhvajastambha is especially noteworthy. The remains of beautiful paintings are preserved on the ceilings on mandapa of this temple. Most paintings are in poor condition and very few are visible clearly.
We explored Cave no. 16,10, 12 and 14 as we had only half day to explore Ellora as it closes at 6:00 pm and it took us two hours to explore Kailasha Temple only. The architecture of Kailasha temple is beautiful and awe inspiring. We are little interested in history and stories of such place so we took a guide and they explained all the places very well. If you are also interested in historical facts and stories like us it is advisable to take guide who are ASI approved and easily available. We didn't got enough time to explore Jain caves which were located around 2 kms away uphill from main Ellora compound. If you want to explore all the 34 caves of Ellora, it will take entire day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. So plan accordingly.
GHRISHNESWAR TEMPLE:
There are 12 Maha Jyotirlingas in India and this temple is one of them situated near Ellora Caves. This jyotirlinga is said to be self originated. It is built in 7th century and temple is made of red sand stones and plaster.
TOMB OF AURANGZEB:
This tomb is of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb located in the complex of Durgah of Sheikh Zainuddin Chisti, last sufi of Chisti family. This tomb is located in Khuldabad, which is 4.4kms from Ellora and on the way to Ajanta. The emperor who was once the richest and most powerful man of his time had left instructions to built his tomb under open sky, covered with earth and a tulsi plant on the top covered with plain white cloth near the resting place of his Guru, Zainuddin Chisti. This is a tomb of the simplest kind contrary to the tomb of his wife, Bibi ka Maqbara in Aurangabad. Do visit the Dargah as well, it is very beautiful.
