It is at a distance of 105 kms from Aurangabad and it takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach here. Direct government buses ply daily from Aurangabad to Ajanta caves.

Also it is well connected to major cities.

But if you are heading here from Mumbai, then it would take around 9-10 hours. So opting for a stay near Ajanta would be a better option.

Jalgaon city, about 60 kilometers from Ajanta Caves is the nearest rail head. Jalgaon Junction is well connected to important cities such as Mumbai, Agra, Bhopal, New Delhi, Gwalior, Jhansi, Goa, Varanasi, Allahabad, Bangalore, Pune among others.

Nearest Airport to Ajanta Caves:
Aurangabad Airport is the closest airport to the Ajanta Caves which is about five and a half kilometers from the city Centre. The airport has direct flights to two important cities, New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Udaipur.

Ajanta Caves entry ticket for Indians and tourists from SAARC and BIMSTEC countries is INR 40. However, a foreigner needs to shell out INR 600 for the Ajanta Caves ticket.

Best time to visit Ajanta Ellora caves:
June to March is the best time to visit Ajanta Ellora Caves due to pleasant weather. From June to September is the monsoon season in India and the region receives average to plenty of rain showers, which fills the landscape with lush green trees making it a beautiful site to witness.
November to February the temperature drops moderately. Summer months (March to May) can actually get very hot especially in the daytime. So, try to avoid this season if you’re planning a visit to Ajanta and Ellora caves.

Ajanta Caves Timings: 9 am to 9:30 pm IST

Ajanta Caves will remain closed on Mondays, while the Ellora Caves will remain closed on Tuesdays.

Ajanta Caves consist of 30 rock-cut caves, showcasing some of the finest paintings and sculptures ever recorded in Indian history. When exploring this archeological gemstone, don’t miss to visit Cave 1, Cave 2, Cave 4 and Cave 17. These caves are a treat to witness and are one of the most famous historical sites in India. Today the site is protected under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The paintings here depict the past lives and rebirths of the Buddha, pictorial tales from Aryasura's Jatakamala, and rock-cut sculptures of Buddhist deities.

On 28 April 1819, John Smith, an officer from British India, discovered the entrance to Cave No. 10 deep within the tangled undergrowth while hunting a tiger, which led to the discovery of the showpiece Ajanta caves
