DENJIRO: Today, we'll look at a mysterious liquid that moves as if it were alive. This is a very powerful neodymium magnet. We'll place an acrylic plate on top of it. Then I will pour this black fluid onto the plate. What will happen?
GIRL: What is this? It's so mysterious!
DENJIRO: Let me blow some air on it.
GIRL: Its spikes are moving!
DENJIRO: Next, we'll pour the liquid into a container filled with water that is placed over the neodymium magnet. Now, I'll move the magnet.
As you can see, the spikes move in interesting ways. This black liquid is a ferrofluid. Fine magnetic particles are mixed with oil, which does not blend with water. That's why it reacts in mysterious ways to the magnet. The same phenomenon can be seen in our daily lives.
This is iron powder. The iron powder is sprinkled onto the acrylic plate. Now I will bring these magnets near it.
GIRL: The iron powder turned into spikes!
DENJIRO: Why does it form this shape? Magnets have magnetic field lines radiating from the north pole to the south pole. The iron powder was making spikes because it was moving along these magnetic field lines.
Each spike is actually functioning as a magnet. If the base of the iron powder is the south pole, the tip of the spikes is the north pole. Since similar poles repel each other, the tip of the spikes spread apart like this. The ferrofluid from earlier was moving according to the same principle.
I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
