DENJIRO: Have you ever made something like this before?
GIRL: It’s shiny. It looks like a rock, but what is it?
DENJIRO: It’s actually a clay ball. I used real clay used for pottery. How did I make it shiny like this? Let me teach you how to make it.
This is a chunk of clay taken from the earth. Over here I have clay that has been made into a powder. I’m going to add water to this. It’s starting to become sticky. I’m going to roll this into a ball and dry it. It’s pretty hard. It’s pretty much a sphere now. If I place this on a hard surface, it will get deformed, so I’m going to place it on this container with cloth over it.
Before the clay gets completely dry, you want to take something like this jar here that’s hard and smooth, and rub the clay ball with it. The part that you rub will become shiny. Shine the entire ball and let it dry completely to get a clay ball like this. Why does it become so shiny?
The grains of clay are very small. Before rubbing the clay, the surface is bumpy, so there is diffuse reflection of light and it doesn’t shine. But if you rub it, the surface becomes smooth since the grains are small, and light is reflected beautifully like a mirror. That’s why it shines.
This clay ball has another characteristic. It is very hard.

GIRL: The clay ball is durable!
DENJIRO: When a clay ball loses its moisture, the grains of clay get closer together, filling in the space in between grains. Since the grains are small, they can get closer together. That’s one of the reasons why a clay ball gets so hard.
