"We would like to tell any mujahidin who lay down their souls in the holy city of Najaf, Muqtada al-Sadr demanded the drawing up of a timetable for the occupiers. As long as there is occupation Iraq will remain an occupied, so the occupation should be scheduled. This is one of the greatest differences between the Islamic resistance and the occupation forces. Then Muqtada al-Sadr demanded the release of all detainees from prisons and he said that he is standing side by side with the detainees in Abu Ghraib and other prisons as they were oppressed by the occupation troops. They stand firm in the face of the occupation, and the most important point that was issued by Sayeed Muqtada al-Sadr was when he said, 'I advise the colonial dictatorial government of Allawi, which has been rejected by the Iraqi people, to resign'."

STORYLINE:

Calm returned to the streets of Najaf on Saturday morning, where birdsong replaced the sound of fierce fighting that has dominated the holy Iraqi city for the nine days.

US tanks maintained a silent presence following clashes with militiamen loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who vowed to fight to "death or victory".

At a news conference in the courtyard of the Imam Ali shrine in Najaf, al-Sadr, whose hand was bandaged, said he would not leave the city.

A spokesman for al-Sadr said the cleric is demanding the withdrawal of US troops and the release of Iraqi prisoners opposed to the allied forces.  Qais al-Khazali said al-Sadr claims the Iraqi government is dictatorial and has been rejected by the people, adding that Prime Minister Iyad Allawi should resign.

A ceasefire in Najaf was announced on Friday to allow for peace talks between Shia militiamen and US troops.

The US military estimated that hundreds of insurgents were killed in the fighting, but the militants dispute the figure.
