STORYLINE:
A US Army OH-58 helicopter made an emergency landing in eastern Baghdad on Sunday, the military said. There were no reports of casualties.
The small observation chopper made "a precautionary landing" just north of Baghdad's Sadr City neighbourhood, said Major Phil Smith, a spokesman for the US Army's 1st Cavalry Division, which is deployed throughout the Iraqi capital.
It wasn't known if the helicopter had been fired upon, or what forced it to land.
Smith said both pilots were fine and that the US military were in the process of recovering the aircraft, which landed safely just north of Sadr City. No other details were immediately available.
Pictures showed a OH-58 aircraft circling around a source of smoke for several minutes as militants on the ground took up position and fired an rocket propelled grenade (RPG) at it.
Reports have so far not been confirmed, but it's thought the helicopter filmed by APTN may have been a second aircraft, circling the emergency landing of the OH-58 aircraft in Sadr City.
Later, one of the militants, a member of the al-Mahdi Army, claimed to have shot down the first helicopter. The militants also fired RPGs at the aircraft filmed by APTN in an attempt to shoot it down.
