Transposons are DNA segment that carry the gene which can move from one site to another. These are the gene sequence which can move and the process to move from one side of DNA to another side is known as transposition. Transposons also known as jumping genes mobile elements junk DNA or selfish DNA also.
Transposon was firstly discovered in 1940 by Barbara McClintock in corn/ maize (kernel colour). For this discovery in 1983 she got Nobel Prize.
Transposons are three types:
IS elements composite elements and non-composite elements.
IS elements-
Inverted repeat (IR):-
Transposes:-
Composite elements- In this, transposable elements contain genes other than those required for transposition. For example, antibiotic resistance or toxin gene. They form when two IS elements insert near each other. They have more than one protein-coding region; they carry antibiotic resistance genes.
Non composite element- They do not have IS element. They have only inverted repeats with certain genes for example Tn-3 have 3 genes. One for – β-lactamase, second for transposes and third-resolvase.
Mechanism of transposition-
Importance of transposons
1) Insert within a gene to cause a mutation or a stimulate DNA arrangement leading to deletion of genetic material.
2) Sometimes transfer zone carry stop codon UAG, UAA, UGA so they can block translation and transcription.
3) Transposons carry promoters so they can activate genes near the point of insertion or sometime they can turn off the gene.
