Groin pain is most often caused by an injury commonly known as a groin pull or a groin strain. It affects muscles at the top of the inner thigh. Groin injuries happen most often to athletes who play sports that require a lot of running and jumping, or sudden stops or starts.

Medically speaking, groin pulls are often divided into three degrees of severity.

1st degree: Mild pain, but little loss of strength or movement

2nd degree: Moderate pain, mild to moderate strength loss and some tissue damage

3rd degree: Severe pain, severe loss of strength and function due to a complete tear of the muscle

Strained or pulled groin muscles typically heal on their own with time and rest, depending on the level of severity. But you can speed the healing process somewhat by doing the following.

* Compress your thigh using an elastic bandage or tape.

* Place ice packs on the inside of your thigh. This will relieve pain and reduce swelling. Doing this for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain subsides.

* Taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen and naproxen will help with pain and swelling. Follow your doctor's recommendations when using such painkillers, because they may have side effects.

* Active stretching and strengthening exercises, as recommended by your doctor or a professional physical therapist, can also help you heal faster. Don't be too aggressive though. Additional damage may occur if you overdo it.

Severe groin injuries may require surgery, but you should only consider it as a last resort. In such cases, you may not be able to return to your previous level of activity for a long time, and perhaps not ever.
