In this video, I will explain the steps to take in order to inhale and exhale normally and quietly vs. forcefully and labored. I will explain the sections of the brain referred to as respiratory center in medulla oblongata (medullary respiratory center: dorsal respiratory group and ventral respiratory group) and in pons (pontine respiratory group), and how these neurons communicate with each other and the muscles of inhalation (main: diaphragm and external intercostal muscles, accessory: sternocleidomastoid, scalene, pectoralis minor) and the muscles of exhalation (internal intercostal muscles, rectus abdominis, external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, transversus abdominis), and the nerves in peripheral nervous system used to send nerve impulses to each group of muscles (phrenic nerves, accessory nerves/cranial nerves XI, spinal nerves C2, C3, C4, C5, C8, and T1 to L1). Also, even though the mechanism is unknown, I will briefly explain the activity and location of Pre-Bötzinger complex in the medulla oblongata. While explaining the steps of inhalation and exhalation, I will review the changes in the volume of the lungs in order to change the pressure inside the lungs following Boyle's law to allow diffusion of air into the lungs or out of the lungs.
