In the video above, the instructor is conducting a free operant observation. Free operant observations allow you to determine which toys a child may like or dislike. Free operant assessments are most appropriate when you are not familiar with the types of items a child may like or dislike. It is also an appropriate assessment to use if a child engages in challenging behavior when favorite toys are taken away, because the child is able to play freely with any item as long as he or she desires.
