DNA Modifying Enzymes. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells possess multiple mechanisms to repair DNA and control damage to their genomes. These include base excision repair (BER) and nucleotide excision repair (NER) that excise and replace damaged nucleotide bases and helix-distorting lesions, respectively.
