Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne, has started her three-year military training at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza. The 17-year-old princess arrived at the academy this morning with her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and her younger sister, Princess Sofia. She was greeted by the military commanders who will oversee her training and assigned to the Cadet Battalion. The future Queen of Spain looked calm and confident as she waved to the crowd and posed for photos with her family. She wore a casual outfit of white jeans and a blue shirt, while her father donned his military uniform. Her mother and sister also opted for simple yet chic looks, with Queen Letizia in a beige suit and Princess Sofia in a green top and jeans. Princess Leonor will undergo a module to help her adapt to military life, which will include a haircut, basic equipment, and the first training session. She will also renounce her salary of 417 euros, which she is entitled to as a cadet. She will follow a strict schedule during the week, but will be allowed to go home on weekends if she is not on duty. Princess Leonor graduated from the UWC Atlantic College in Wales in May, where she studied the International Baccalaureate. The prestigious school, which costs 67,000 pounds per year, is known for its progressive approach to education and its stunning castle setting. It offers courses such as Tai Chi, Tibetan literature, and the theory of knowledge. Princess Leonor is following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, who both received military training in all three branches of the armed forces. After completing her training at Zaragoza, she will attend the naval school and the air force academy. She announced her plans to join the military at an award ceremony in July, where she expressed her excitement and determination to learn and serve her country. She said: ‘I have just finished high school and I am about to start a new stage with a period of military training. I am happy because I know how much the Spanish value our armed forces… it is an important moment in my life and I feel very excited and determined to continue learning and giving my best effort.’ She delivered her speech in Spanish, Catalan, and English, showing off her linguistic skills and winning applause from the audience. She wore a striking emerald dress and gold shoes for the occasion. After finishing her military training in 2026, Princess Leonor plans to go to university to study law, following her father’s example. King Felipe studied law at the Autonomous University of Madrid before pursuing a master’s degree in international relations at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Princess Leonor is expected to become Spain’s first female monarch since Isabella II, who reigned from 1833 to 1868. She is also one of the youngest heirs in Europe, along with Prince Christian of Denmark and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium.
