Deputising for 70000 'Britannia' after her serious motion failure a month previously, 46100 'Royal Scot' was in charge of a Steam Dreams trip to York. Starting behind diesel at Shoeburyness, the train would run through Barking and Hackney to Finsbury Park and follow the East Coast Mainline north. At Peterborough, 46100 would take over for the remaining journey to York. The return would be the reverse of the outward run.

First the train is seen at Sutton on Trent. Having taken on water at Carlton on Trent Loop, 46100 is heard accelerating under the A1 motorway with a cheerful whistle to boot! The fireman swings on another round of coal as the Scot nears the level crossing creating a smokey exhaust. 'Royal Scot' strides passed, ejecting soot and ashes from the chimney down on the lineside and draws the 12 coach train onto York, with some heavy assistance from 47593 'Galloway Princess' at the rear.

On the return we travel 7 miles south to Newark Northgate station. Some persistent announcements on the platform precede the Scot, partially obscuring some exhortative whistling from the crew. The thunder rolling from the double chimney becomes extremely loud, as 46100 roars through the station at 70mph, in preparation for the beginning of the climb to Grantham and Stoke Summit, with 47593 chuntering away at the back.

Excellent to see 'Royal Scot' for the first time in a few years, on top form!.
