A much shorter video than I was hoping to make of Saphos Trains "William Shakespeare" on 3rd August. Following a 2 week total steam ban on the national network, cooler temperatures and rain in some areas allowed steam to run again, with precautions being made with diesel assistance.

This trip, from Carnforth to Stratford-upon-Avon, would have 46100 Royal Scot take over at Crewe to reach Warwickshire via Stafford, Walsall, and Small Heath. However, a cable theft in the Tyseley area resulted in no trains travelling any further than Dorridge, with some even terminating at Banbury. A total line block from Dorridge to Birmingham Moor St would effect 'The Scot' reaching the medieval town. My first planned location was due to be Olton, but because of the problems endured, I had to settle at Dorridge.

After sitting at Castle Bromwich Jn for an extra hour, passing service trains confirmed that the problems had been resolved, and 46100 got moving again, passing us 10 minutes later. Not expecting much, with a downhill grade and the fire risk, it was a pleasant surprise to hear Royal Scot working the train on her own after being signal checked by Bentley Heath LC.

After this 2 shots should've followed, one of the ECS move that would head back to Dorridge for servicing, via the Hatton triangle to face the correct way for the journey home, and then a shot of the return journey. However when the train remained at Stratford after arriving at the exact time it was due to depart as ECS, it became clear something was up. It was wondered if the servicing would take place at Stratford and the train would turn around on the way home.

News soon came through after that Network Rail had insisted the train be diesel hauled back to Crewe, as there had supposedly still been a full steam ban on in the West Midlands. The only exception to this was Vintage Trains William Shakespears, which had been made an exception to this rule with special instructions in order to run with steam. So with 47828 now due to tow the train and 46100 at the rear all the way back, there wasn't any point staying around and I abandoned the rest of my plan and headed for home early.

Another one of 'those days', but it was good to see Royal Scot for the first time in a few years.
