Step ups are a lower body exercise which strengthens almost every muscle in your lower body, particularly your glutes, quads, and hamstrings. As a unilateral exercise, these are great for evening out imbalances between the two sides. Watch how to do a dumbbell step up in our video.

1. Stand in front of the step or plyo box with your feet hip width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Brace your core.
2. Place your left foot on to the box and drive through this foot to push your body up and bring your right foot on to the platform.
3. As you push up, focus on squeezing your glutes and maintaining a tall spine.
4. Return your right leg back to the floor. Focus on using your leg muscles to control the descent.
5. You can alternate between legs or switch after you've finished reps.
