The term immobilized enzyme is used to denote “enzymes physically confined or localized in a defined region of space with retention of their catalytic activities and which can be used repeatedly and continuously”. An immobilized enzyme is one whose movement in space has been restricted either completely or to a small limited region.
Advantages:
Easy recovery of the product
Product is free from enzyme, so there is no cost of purification of enzyme.
Disadvantages:
Loss of catalytic properties for some enzymes
Ideal Carrier Matrices for Enzyme Immobilization
Inert.
Physically strong and stable
Cost effective
The various methods of enzyme immobilization are broadly classified as
Adsorption
Covalent bonding
Entrapment
Microencapsulation
Crosslinking
