In this episode I provide the history of the Cadillac Catera, a German-built compact sedan based on the Opel Omega that sold from 1997 to 2001. It was Cadillac's second attempt at a compact car following the disaster that was the Cimarron in the 1980s. Its bland looks and unexciting driving experience, several recalls, and a strange ad campaign touting the Catera as "the Caddy that zigs", featuring a cartoon bird named Ziggy, led to sales dropping quickly after the first couple years, and being discontinued after only a 5-year run. It's replacement, the CTS, took a much different styling approach and soon became the hit Cadillac needed.
