The kingdom of Goryeo (고려, 高麗) was founded in 918. It unified the Korean Peninsula by subjugating Silla and Hubaekje. The name Korea is derived from the name of Goryeo. It was first used in the 5th century when Goguryeo (37 BC - 668 AD) shortened its name to Goryeo. Goryeo was established by Wang Geon 왕건, later Taejo of Goryeo.
In this episode, we will focus on Munjong (문종, 文宗) and his sons, including Uicheon (의천) who founded the Cheontae school of Buddhism (천태종, 天台宗). This is considered the Golden Age of Goryeo. A balance of power was established between Goryeo, Song and Liao.
We will look at the Tripitaka Koreana (팔만 대장경, 八萬 大藏經), the most complete and accurate extant collection of Buddhist treatises, laws and scriptures. I will discuss general Yun Gwan (윤관, 尹瓘) who defended Goryeo against the Jurchen (여진, 女真) but ended up embroiled in political intrigue and manipulation.
Next, we will discuss king Yejong's 예종 reign and his relationship with the Song empire. Finally, we will look at the House of Yi, especially Yi Ja-gyeom (이자겸), and the power it wielded over the Goryeo monarchs. This episode explores the years 1046 to 1126.
