The kingdom of Goryeo (고려, 高麗) was founded in 918. It unified the Korean Peninsula by subjugating Silla and Hubaekje. The name Korea is derived from the name of Goryeo. It was first used in the 5th century when Goguryeo (37 BC - 668 AD) shortened its name to Goryeo. Goryeo was established by Wang Geon, later Taejo of Goryeo.
In this episode, we will discuss Myo Cheong (묘청), the Buddhist monk who rebelled and founded the very short-lived state of Taewi (대위국). Kim Bu-shik (김부식) , the man credited for the compilation of the Samguk Sag (record of the 3 kingdoms of Korea), led a military campaign against the monk and became the supreme chancellor.
Next, we will discuss the reign of King Uijong (의종, 毅宗). His attitude toward military officers led to a military coup in which true power was in the hands of a succession of generals. There was a purge against Buddhist institutions during this time.
Finally, we will talk about Choe Chung-heon (최충헌, 崔忠獻) and how him and his clan had absolute power in the royal court. He continued to use the Dobang 도방, a private military unit, to control the throne for many years.
