King Sejong 세종, born Yi Do 이도, was the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty. He’s remembered first and foremost for inventing the Hunminjeongeum better known as Hangul, the Korean alphabet, which I have discussed in part one (King Sejong and the creation of Hangu...)
In this video, I will discuss his life more thoroughly and look at other achievements of his. I will talk about his his turbulent first years on the throne, his marriage to Queen Soheon 소헌왕후 and the death of her father Shim On 심온.
Sejong continued suppressing Buddhism throughout the land, although he was himself a believer in Buddhism but Joseon was a Neo-Confucian society and Buddhism was at odds with it. Sejong wrote a buddhist hymn for his late queen. It’s called Songs of the Moon’s Reflections on a Thousand Rivers (Worincheongangjigok 월인천강지곡).
With the help of his father, he suppressed Japanese piracy and signed a treaty in Tsushima with the Sō clan, the Treaty of Gyehae 계해조약. Sejong also retook some land to the north that was taken by the Jurchens. General Kim Jongseo 김종서 was in charge of this expedition.
King Sejong had very talented people in his court. One of those was Jang Yeong-sil 장영실 who came up with new designs for water clocks, armillary spheres and sundials. He also made the cheugugi 측우기, the first well-known rain gauge.
During Sejong's reign, many important books were written: the Samganghaengsildo 삼강행실도, an Illustrated Guide to the Three Bonds found in confucianism, the Hyangyak jipseongbang 향약집성방, a book on traditional Korean medicine and the Nongsa Jikseol 농사직설, a book on agriculture. The latter was written by Sejong himself. He also wrote many musical pieces with his teacher, Bak Yeon 박연.
King Sejong is called Sejong Daewang, meaning King Sejong the Great. He has left an undeniable trace in Korea history, primarily by his creation of Hangul / Hangeul. He also wanted sciences to bloom in Joseon and he achieved some peace in the south as well as the north of the country.
