Join us as we travel from Manila to Taiwan for a week-long tour!
In this Taiwan travel vlog, tag along as we navigate our way from Taoyuan airport to the southern city of Kaohsiung [高雄市], riding the Taiwan High-Speed Rail (bullet train) and the local subway... and at sundown, stroll with us to the Liuhe Night Market [高雄市] for a taste of what the city offers.
Here's our Taiwan travel itinerary, Day 1: March 8, 2023
- Flew into Taoyuan via Philippine Airlines (PAL) in the morning
at Taoyuan Airport:
- exchanged our US$ for NT$
- claimed our Taiwan SIM cards (2) that we bought via Klook
- bought EasyCards (one for each of us) at the 7-Eleven store in the airport basement; loaded 1,000NT$ each, good for the entire stay
- got on the AREX (Airport Express) train to HSR Taoyuan Station
at Taiwan High Speed Rail Taoyuan Station:
- bought tickets to HSR Zouying [左營] Station (Kaohsiung)
- bought baked goodies and had a snack while waiting for our train to arrive
- got on the bullet train to Kaohsiung
at Kaohsiung:
- navigated our way from the HSR Station to the MRT Station (Zuoying) and got on the red line train to the MRT Kaohsiung Main Station
at Kaohsiung Main Station:
- navigated our way out of the huge subway station up several levels to the street exit
- walked towards Kindness Hotel, which is across Jianguo 2nd Street (in front of the station)
There's construction going on at Kaohsiung Main Station (it has been going on since our first visit in 2018), leaving no direct exit to Jianguo 2nd Street. So we had to exit to the side of the station and walk around the station premises to get to the hotel.
We booked our 2-night stay at Kindness Hotel Kaohsiung Main Station [康橋商旅-高雄站前館] (thru Agoda). The hotel, apart from being a stone's throw away from the Main Station, is also within the 1km radius of Liuhe Night Market, Jhongjheng Wedding Dress District, two other Kindness Hotel branches (Houri Jiuru and Zhongshan Bade), and the famous Formosa Boulevard Station [美丽岛站], known for its Dome of Light, (the largest glass work in the world, made up of 4,500 glass panels) and its four glass pedestrian entrances. (More of this station will be seen on our Day 2 vlog.)
Tired and starving, we went to a nearby 7-Eleven to buy food, after checking in and freshening up at the hotel. We may have eaten too much, coz it didn't work to our advantage when we visited Liuhe Night Market after sundown. Still digesting our convenience store meals, we only managed to have a few bites of street food. But that's not to say we didn't enjoy it.
Visiting Liuhe Night Market again after several years was delightful, especially seeing that businesses survived the pandemic and that people - both local and foreign visitors - have started trickling back in.
We will post more details of our trip in the coming episodes; we will dedicate one to feature the itinerary, our travel budget, the preparations we made for this trip including the documents needed to meet travel requirements, and pretty much every Taiwan travel tip we can share for our viewers who plan to visit Taiwan soon.
