THE IMPERFECT INDICATIVE
The indicative is the most common and frequent verbal mood. It's used to indicate a fact, an action or an idea that is real, certain and objective.
Let's discover together how to form the imperfect tense!
First of all, we will see the imperfect indicative of the verbs "essere" and "avere", fundamental also because they act as auxiliaries to form compound tenses of all other verbs.

Tu eri
Lui/lei era
Noi eravamo
Voi eravate
Loro erano
Io avevo
Tu avevi
Lui/lei aveva
Noi avevamo

Ex: Quando ero piccolo, avevo un orso di peluche.
As for all other verbs, instead, to form the imperfect indicative we must remove the endings of the infinitive (-ARE, -ERE, -IRE) and add those of the imperfect.
Here are the imperfect endings for the different groups of verbs:

We can note that, unlike the present indicative, in the imperfect of verbs in -IRE, there is no distinction between the conjugation of verbs as "partire" and that of verbs as "finire", but the endings are the same.

Surprisingly, many verbs that are irregular in the present indicative take a completely regular conjugation in the imperfect! For example: andare → io andavo…, tenere → io tenevo…, uscire → io uscivo…
The following verbs also remain irregular even in the imperfect:
