The Italian language has many past tenses… Which one to use? Imperfect or passato prossimo? Passato prossimo or passato remoto? And what is the trapassato prossimo used for? Not to mention trapassato remoto! In this lesson, we analyze all the Italian past tenses and we try to make things clearer, once and for all!
PAST TENSES in Italian… Which one to use?
“Il 18 febbraio sono andata alla festa di compleanno della mia amica Silvia. Da piccola non amava festeggiare. Ma poi ha cambiato idea, per fortuna!
La festa era in un locale molto bello con vista panoramica sul mare. Nel locale c’erano molti palloncini blu, il suo colore preferito. Gli invitati erano moltissimi! E tutti erano estremamente eleganti! Per fortuna anche io avevo comprato un bel vestito per l’occasione.
Però, che figura! Mentre entravo con il mio vestito nuovo e le mie scarpe alte… sono inciampata! Io ero per terra e tutti ridevano!
Per fortuna poi il dj ha messo la musica e tutti hanno dimenticato la mia caduta. Così ci siamo divertiti moltissimo. Non avevo mai partecipato ad una festa così straordinaria!”
(“On the 18th of February I went to the birthday party of my friend Silvia. She didn’t like to celebrate when she was little. But then she changed her mind, luckily! The party was in a very beautiful club with a panoramic view on the sea. In the club there were many blue balloons, her favorite color. The guests were so many! And all of them were extremely elegant! Luckily I had also bought a beautiful dress for the event. But… how embarrassing! While I was entering with my new dress and my shoes with high heels… I tripped! I was on the floor and all laughed! Luckily then the dj turned up the music and all forgot my fall. So we had a lot of fun. I had never taken place in such an extraordinary party!“)

PASSATO PROSSIMO
1) The passato prossimo indicative is used to indicate a fact that took place in a recent past
Il 18 febbraio sono andata alla festa di compleanno della mia amica Silvia.
Sono inciampata!
Per fortuna poi il dj ha messo la musica e tutti hanno dimenticato la mia caduta.
Così ci siamo divertiti moltissimo.
2) The passato prossimo indicative is also used to indicate a fact that took place in the past but that has consequences in the present…
Ma poi ha cambiato idea, per fortuna!

IMPERFETTO
1) The imperfect indicative is used to indicate past habits.
Da piccola non amava festeggiare.
2) The imperfect indicative is also used for descriptions in the past.
La festa era in un locale molto bello con vista panoramica sul mare.
Nel locale c’erano molti palloncini blu, il suo colore preferito.
Gli invitati erano moltissimi! E tutti erano estremamente eleganti!
3) The imperfect is also used to express actions in progress in the past interrupted by other actions (in the passato prossimo).
Mentre entravo con il mio vestito nuovo e le mie scarpe alte… sono inciampata!
4) The imperfect also expresses contemporaneity in the past.
Io ero per terra e tutti ridevano!

TRAPASSATO PROSSIMO
[imperfect indicative of the auxiliary + past participle of the verb]
The trapassato prossimo is used to express an action happened before another one in the past (expressed with imperfect, passato prossimo or passato remoto).
Per fortuna anche io avevo comprato un bel vestito per l’occasione.
Non avevo mai partecipato ad una festa così straordinaria!
(the fact of buying a dress or not participating happened before the moment of the party!)
It doesn’t end there! In Italian, there are other 2 past tenses:
PASSATO REMOTO
It is used to indicate a fact happened and ended in the past. It is the typical tense of narrative tenses.
Si svegliò, si ricordò di non dover andare a lavoro e si addormentò di nuovo. (He woke up, he reminded that he didn’t have to go to work and he fell asleep again)
The passato remoto is very irregular and it has no real formation rule. What’s really important is to know it, or better, to recognize it!
