Gangotri is a place in Uttarkhashi District of Uttarkhand . A Temple dedicated to Godess river Ganga is situated here. Gangotri Temple is one of the four pilgrimage of #Uttarakhand known as #CharDham. Gangotri is believe to be a birth place of holy river Ganges, which is known a #Bhagirathi before confluence with #Alaknanda river at #Devprayag.
Snout of #GangotriGlacier is known as #Gaumukh considered as holy place. Gaumukh is 22 Km away from gangotri temple.
Ganga River is the #longestriverofIndia which is 2,525 Km long , its emerges from the Gangotri Glacier situated in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, India at the height of 4000 meter form the mean sea level.The glacier is about 30 kilometres long and 2 to 4 km wide and it is surrounded by several Himalayan mountains. Gangotri glacier, currently 30 km long and between 0.5 and 2.5 km wide, is one of the largest in the Himalayas. Due to Global Warming this glacier has been constantly receding. at the rate of 25 meter/ year.
Water of Ganga river is considered as holy and pious. It is believed that a person get rid of all sins, if he /she took dip in the water of holy River Ganga, but due to many human reason now water of ganges is polluted drastically. There are several streches of Ganges ,where water is not potable at all.
