Ascanio Savio left us a clear testimony of Don Bosco’s discernment of spirits:
It was a common rumor in the Oratory since 1848 that Don Bosco discovered the sins of the youth by reading them on their foreheads. To test him, many young men would say: “Don Bosco, can you read my sins.” Don Bosco would sometimes speak confidentially in someone’s ear, and it became evident to the others that he saw their sins accurately because the boy would not ask again.
One evening, Don Bosco preached a mission in a certain church in the Vercelli area. A young man named Giulio was asking Don Bosco the same question: “Can you also see the sins I have committed and tell me?” Don Bosco spoke secretly in his ear as he did with others. After hearing the saint’s words, the latter looked shocked and told the others: “I came from a distant city today and have never known of Don Bosco and never confessed in the Vercelli church. Yet, that man knew my sins!” He proclaimed that Don Bosco knew his heart by a supernatural grace.
There was a widespread opinion that Don Bosco read the sins on his son’s foreheads. This was not true, but in many beautiful ways, various boys tried to cover their foreheads so that he could not read them. Needless to say, that didn’t work.
I was told by my brother, Don Angelo, that once, Don Bosco got up in the morning and wrote notes to various young men of the Oratory, among them my brother. I asked him: “Did he see your faults?” He told me that he did. In the manner in which he spoke to me, it was evident that they were hidden defects and could not be known except by supernatural grace.
