How Airplane Wings/Flaps Working - Take Off Starting Process (LIVE CLOSE UP)

Takeoff flap settings typically vary between 5-15 degrees. Aircraft use takeoff flap settings that are usually between 5-15 degrees (most jets use leading edge slats as well). That's quite a bit different than landing, when aircraft typically use 25-40 degrees of flaps.

Flap settings for each are usually driven by weight, runway condition, runway length, accelerate stop/go performance and climb performance. I’d say 90% of the time we takeoff with minimal flaps, like flaps 5, but will increase the flap setting to flaps 15 should we need to use a shorter runway.

Landing flaps are usually fully extended at flaps 30 unless the wind is gusty. During this scenarios, it may be prudent to protect your flaps should you encounter a high gust.

In this case, you might select flaps 25 as opposed to flaps 30 to give you a better over speed margin.

With increased wind gusts, you can easily over speed your flap setting. Setting a less than full selection gives you a larger buffer for this rapidly changing wind load.

For aircraft that take off horizontally, this usually involves starting with a transition from moving along the ground on a runway. For balloons, helicopters and some specialized fixed-wing aircraft (VTOL aircraft such as the Harrier), no runway is needed. Takeoff is the opposite of landing.
