Adverse possession is a legal doctrine that allows a person to claim ownership of a piece of land or property if they have used and occupied it openly and continuously, without the owner's permission, for a certain period of time. In India, the law of adverse possession is governed by the Limitation Act, 1963, which prescribes a limitation period of 12 years for bringing a suit to recover possession of immovable property.

To establish a claim of adverse possession, the claimant must prove that their possession of the property was open, continuous, uninterrupted, peaceful, and adverse to the true owner's possession. The claimant must also show that they possessed the property for the entire statutory period (i.e., 12 years), without any interruption by the true owner.

If the claimant meets all the requirements for adverse possession, they may be able to acquire title to the property and defend it against the true owner's claim of ownership. However, adverse possession is a complicated legal doctrine, and it is essential to consult with a lawyer who specializes in property law to determine whether adverse possession applies in a particular case.
