The Defence Force has reportedly begun dismantling its grounded fleet of Army MRH-90 Taipan helicopters.

According to the 'Asia Pacific Defence Reporter' (APDR), the decision was signed off in secret to destroy them rather than try to sell them.

The publication suggests some expensive components such as gear boxes are being sold to New Zealand.

The dismantling process is expected to take several months, before parts are buried in what's been dubbed 'a large defence landfill site.'

Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Friday: “We are looking at all the options available for maximising the value which sits within the Taipan fleet”.
