Here's how to replace the thermostat in a Sears Kenmore refrigerator, which is made by Whirlpool. I also show how to defrost a freezer. In this case, it's possible that defrosting the freezer would have made the thermostat work properly again, but I didn't want to have to do this twice, so I put in a new thermostat while I was in there. The thermostat was $20 at my local appliance parts store. Sears has complete diagrams of all of their appliances on their website, and they also sell replacement parts there. If you have another brand of refrigerator, somewhere behind or under the refrigerator you should be able to find an envelope with a diagram of all of the electrical parts. If you defrost your refrigerator, make sure you have a plan for what to do with all of the water that comes from the melting ice. Some refrigerators have a drip pan underneath, which will fill up with water. These drip pans are breeding grounds for bacteria, so handle it carefully and wash it well before replacing it.
