As Christmas is nearing, did a plum cake exploration in Bangalore. Visited five of the iconic bakeries in Bangalore that are dishing out sinfully decadent plum cakes for decades. Here is the detailed coverage:
1. Variar Bakery: Though Variar bakery doesn't prepare the plum cake the traditional way, nevertheless their special Christmas plum cake is an extension of their adorable fruit cake, hence it retains some of the characteristics of the fruit cake. The cake is moist and absolutely delicious and it is priced at INR 780/- per kg. Good thing is that the plum cake is made with mixed fruits that are soaked in Rum.

All Saints: The plum cake here is made following the authentic English recipe and it is full of flavours as they add mixed fruits soaked in Rum, along with that so many flavour and taste enhancers like Giner, Orange peel, marmalade, Caramel etc., are added. The price here is INR 900/- per kg. Good on the moisture quotient as well.

3. Koshy's: Priced at 750/- per kg the plum cake at Koshy's is a delight. It will remind you of the plum cake you would have had during your childhood days. Though it is not loaded with so many spices and flavours, but it looks the part and tastes great with the fruits soaked in Rum giving an extra cheer.

4. Fatima: You get the goodness in each bite of this plum cake in which the flavour of alcohol is pronounced a bit extra. Super moist plum cake and they suggest refrigerating the cake before cutting it to maintain the moisture. One kg of this plum cake would cost you INR 800/-.

5. Thom's: The best in it's league, which is extremely high on flavours, thanks to the numerous spices they have added including Garam masala. This is the only cake where the flavour of Rum is super dominant and you can feel it when you taste the raisins or other mixed fruits. These incredibly moist, lovely plum cakes leave you wanting more and they bear the price tag of INR 800/- kg.
