This is an assisted stretch
This is an assisted stretch to lengthen and reduce tightness in the calf muscles of the soleus, gastrocnemius, posterior tibialis and peroneals.
Cup the calcaneus with one hand
Use your forearm as a lever on the foot
Push the talus with the opposite hand (this will create more room for the ankle to move)
Hold for 10-15 seconds
Have client straighten foot (40-50% effort) for 4-6 seconds
Have client relax & move foot/ankle into new ROM
Repeat 2-3 times
Use the stoplight system:
Green - good
Yellow - too much, check-in
Red - STOP
Encourage client to relax and breathe deeply while being stretched
