Join me as I take a walk around the places that inspired and shaped Robert Burns as he was growing up, including the Brig O’Doon, Alloway Auld Kirk and the Burns Cottage where he was born and spent his younger years. I’ll also visit a few landmarks that exist because of Robert Burns including the Poet’s Path, the Burns Monument and Memorial Garden.

Alloway was once a village but these days it is regarded as a suburb of Ayr, however it still maintains the appearance of a small, tightly knit community and is well connected to the memory and history of Robert Burns. There’s a small post office, local convenience store and an independent, family run pharmacy on the High Street .

My tour of Robert Burns related sights begins at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and then passes through a weaving trail behind the trees called the Poet’s Path. It’s here I found a few sculptures relating to his poems and a themed bench perfect for sitting and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. It’s also possible to visit his 18th century childhood home aptly referred to as the Burns Cottage which is now a museum.

From there I strolled along to the ruined Alloway Auld Kirk which is beloved to the inspiration for more of his poems, it’s also the place where his father William Burnes is buried. Close by is another impressive sight - the Grecian style Burns Monument and Memorial Garden which offers wonderful views across the Ayrshire countryside surrounding Alloway. From atop you can easily see the Brig O’Doon.

I decided to take a two minute walk down to the bottom of the memorial garden and walk over the Bridge which has a steep hump and is made of stone. It crosses the River Doon and is a great spot for photos and maybe even the odd selfie.

I made this video as I drove the South West Coastal 300 in the south of Scotland from Ayr to Stranraer - a true road trip in the Scottish Lowlands. When I made the decision to visit Alloway I had no idea there was so much to see and learn - hopefully you’ve enjoyed this brief history of Robert Burns and my tour of Alloway, Scotland.
