SCOTLAND’S HIGHEST VILLAGE | Wanlockhead to Loch Doon | SWC300 E2

SOUTH WEST COASTAL 300 E2: Continuing my road trip in south Scotland by visiting Scotland’s highest village Wanlockhead, the world’s oldest post office in Sanquhar & a historic castle near Loch Doon.

After checking out of my guest house in Moffat (see previous video for details) I followed a winding country road up into the Lowther Hills and onto an old lead mining village called Wanlockhead - a place that also happens to be the highest village in Scotland. Over the years copper, zinc, lead, silver and even gold were mined from the hills around Wanlockhead and these days you can visit a museum and even see the old beam engines as they used to be.
From there I followed the stunning Mennock Pass down to the small market town of Sanquhar where I stopped by the world’s oldest post office - incredibly enough it’s been continuously operating since 1712. I also found a striking Georgian town house that presents the Tolbooth Museum, as well as a fairly typical High Street. After an hour of exploring I was back on the road driving through more green hells and country roads.
About an hour later I turned off the main road and followed a single track lane over to Loch Doon and it’s famous castle. In the 1930’s the loch was turned into a reservoir and as a result of the rising water levels the castle either had to be flooded and lost or moved across to the new shore - thankfully planners chose the latter and before the dam was constructed the castle was carefully disassembled and rebuilt in its new location.
Another enjoyable day driving the South West Coastal 300 in the lowlands of Scotland, in the next video I’ll be heading closer to the coast - see you there!
