Protected from head to toe. “This goes over the neck to protect the thyroid gland from radiation. This is a pelvic shield. This is a pelvic shield, so this may be placed over the pelvis in order to protect the gonads from radiation,” explained Dr. Heidi Lewis, a pediatric radiologist on the medical staff of Lee Health.
For 50 years, any time a patient received an x-ray, they were required to wear a protective shield. “You may have noticed when you go to the doctor, and you get an x-ray or when you go to the dentist and you get an x-ray of your teeth, they put a lead apron on you in order to attempt to protect you from the x-rays. Since radiation was discovered, there’s been concern that radiation effects to certain parts of the body are something to be worried about,” said Dr. Lewis.
But new research shows shielding may not be as effective as it was once believed. “It’s been discovered now that the radiation effect to the gonads is not really as bad as it once was thought to be. The amount of radiation exposure that the gonads get is kind of negligible and actually shielding them can create an increase in radiation,” she explained.
New studies also suggest that shielding can actually increase the dose of radiation a patient receives. “Most of the dose to the gonads actually occurs because of radiation scatter inside the body. Most of the time that radiation will actually exist in the body and so it’s not a significant dose. But if you put a lead shield over the top of the body, what happens is that x-ray is going to bounce through the body, hit the shielding, and then bounce back into the body again and so it doesn’t escape,” said Dr. Lewis.
Starting October 1st, patients at Lee Health will no longer wear a protective shield during an x-ray.
