STORYLINE:
The senior Iranian envoy, Ali Larijani, currently on a visit to Iraq, on Tuesday visited the holiest Shiite shrine in the city of Najaf 180 kilometres (112 miles) south of Baghdad.
The Imam Ali shrine is venerated as the fourth holiest site by Muslims, particularly Shiites.
Shiite Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad and the fourth caliph, is buried there.
After his tour of the shrine he went on to meet the top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.
During his visit to Iraq Larijani has offered his country's support for the Iraqi government stressing the importance of preserving the country's unity.
Larijani is the highest-ranking Iranian official to visit Iraq since the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.
Iran has agreed to join the US and other countries at the International Conference on Iraqi Security to be held in the Egyptian red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on May 3 and 4.
Iran's agreement to attend the conference has raised hopes the government in Tehran will help stabilise its neighbour and stem the alleged flow of guns and bombs over Iraq's porous borders.
