STORYLINE:
A United Nations delegation visited Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, in the city of Najaf on Wednesday.
The delegation included Miguel Moratinos, the head of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and Jeanine Plasschaert, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.
The aim of the visit was to discuss peaceful coexistence with the Shiite house in Iraq, according to Plasschaert.
"We do not do politics today, but the message of peaceful coexistence goes for everyone," said Plasschaert as she briefed the media in Najaf.
A statement released by Sistani’s office said: "His Eminence stressed the importance of concerted efforts to promote a culture of peaceful coexistence, (and) reject violence and hatred."
He also talked about the tragedies affecting many peoples and ethnic groups in various parts of the world "as a result of the intellectual and religious persecution," the statement said.
