The new moon day of the lunar calendar in the month of Pushya, that is bhahula amāvāsyā to be specific, is the day to remember and honour Sri. Purandara Dāsa (1484 – 1564) for his significant and legendary contribution to Carnatic music. This day, we observe as his Puñya-dina or Ārādhana which this year (2019) falls on the Monday, the 4th of February.

Remembering Karnataka Sangeetha Pithāmaha with reverence on his Ārādhana, we  offer our salutations through this album – Kanaka Purandara Kaivalya Darshana in Muralīgānam.

In this exclusive programme of devotional music, Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna (BMK) renders some of the Kannada compositions of Purandara Dāsa, Kanaka Dāsa and a kaivalya pada of Muppina Shadakshari.

This concert was originally produced and relayed by Doordarshan on the 7th July 1981. The audio recorded on a cassette tape has now been restored, remastered and presented here for the purpose of posterity.

BMK is accompanied on the violin by Sri. Annavarapu Ramaswami and on the mridangam by Sri. T V Gopalakrishnan.

BMK being a vaggéyakāra (composer – performer) par excellence, is well known for his acumen in mirroring the thoughts in the composition of another vaggéyakāra and lakshañakāra (musicologist) with an optimum setting of aesthetics.

This album serves as one of the best examples of a tunesmith who could effectively mirror the emotions of Kanaka Dāsa, Purandara Dāsa and Muppina Shadakshari through their compositions presented here.

BMK’s contribution to popularise Purandara Dāsa’s compositions  is not only limited to his all time great film hits in Kannada over several decades, but also as a poet he  translated them and sang them for the non-Kannada audience worldwide. Thus he championed the contemporary relevance of their import.
