After clinching a close win
After clinching a close win in the first T20I Sri Lanka are set to take on Bangladesh again. It's time for the second T20I as the hosts will look to bounce back today and level the series. Bangladesh's top-order struggled against the Lankans a couple of days back but the knocks by Jaker Ali and Mahmudullah were the positives for them.
After suffering a narrow three-run defeat against Sri Lanka in a thrilling contest in the opening T20I in Sylhet Bangladesh would have to get their act together against the Charith Asalanka-led team in a must-win fixture on Wednesday (March 6) at the mentioned venue.
Bangladesh after opting to field struck twice inside the Powerplay removing Avishka Fernando and Kamindu Mendis. However the home team lost the plot in the middle overs as Kusal Mendis (36-ball 59) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (61 off 48) set Sri Lanka on course.
Later Asalanka’s breezy knock took Sri Lanka to 206/3. What eventually made the difference in the end was that Bangladesh leaked aplenty runs (70) off the final 30 balls. In response Bangladesh were off to a poor start as they lost three wickets in the first six overs.
Mahmudullah then batted with intent and smashed boundaries consistently. Jaker Ali initially supported Mahmudullah (54) and stepped up to the plate once the latter was back in the hut. Jaker took full advantage of Sri Lanka’s poor bowling and in the process hit a half-century.
With 12 required off the last 6 balls all eyes were on Jaker but he fell to Dasun Shanaka who displayed nerves of steel. Bangladesh were still in it until the last ball though requiring half-a-dozen runs off the final delivery to get over the line but Taskin Ahmed couldn't manage the big hit.
Competition for spots in Bangladesh's T20I squad has never been more intense and for the likes of Jaker Ali Towhid Hridoy and Mahedi Hasan strong performances in a crucial match such as the second T20I would help them in the long run. Sri Lanka too are in the process of finding.
A settled combination for the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean in June later this year and a third consecutive T20I series victory will do their confidence a world of good. It’s pertinent to note that Sri Lanka the 2014 World T20 champions beat Afghanistan and Zimbabwe earlier this year.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will face-off after a day’s break. Sri Lanka would be eyeing an unbeatable 2-0 lead while this will be Bangladesh’s only chance to level the three-match series. On mathematical possibility Gujarat Giants may not be knocked out of WPL 2024 even if they lose their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Sri Lanka: Matheesha Pathirana who struggled with cramps and also proved to be expensive (1/56) could miss out. Bangladesh: No concerns (reportedly) Head-to-Head Record in T20Is 14 - Matches Played 10 - Sri Lanka Won 4 - Bangladesh Won.
On the other hand Sri Lanka's batters and the bowlers chipped in with pivotal contributions and put up a team performance as they took a 1-0 lead. The venue is same will Bangladesh manage to turn things around?
